When there are no bunnies...

Last week was very strange according to my metrics. I only saw one bunny, and it was a little bunny rabbit. There were no big bunny hares at all! I guess it was too hot and windy for them. To be honest, it was too hot and windy for me too, but I don't have the option of staying home in my warren.

On Wednesday I saw one of the saddest things of my life. I was driving to Sacramento to have an eye exam and get new sunglasses. In the next lane over there was a duck that had been hit by a car. Roadkill-duck is sad enough, but the really heart-wrenching part is that she wasn't alone. The accident must have just happened because her duckie companion was still standing in the lane, looking completely baffled. It was as if he had no idea what happened to his duck-mate or what to do next. I know that that's sheer anthropomorphizing, but that's how it appeared. It brought a mist to the eyes.

To make up for that, Thursday brought a very funny sight: a squirrel being attacked by a scrub jay. The poor squirrel; it was so completely cowed by the jay. It kept running from the bird, which kept pecking its butt. The bird was completely undeterred by its attempts to flee. It would just hop after the squirrel, harry it a little bit, and peck it in the butt again. I wonder what the squirrel did to incur its wrath.
