Settling in

Although I sprinted to unpack everything right away after moving in, I'm only just getting around to putting things on the walls. This got delayed because I'm not entirely self-sufficient in wall-decorating. I had to get around to asking my roommate if I could borrow a hammer and nails for my framed pictures, and I had to go to Office Max to get stickums for my postcard collection (which requires a lot of stickums!). I accomplished both of those yesterday.

I decided to start with the framed pictures: a much more tractable job. This turned out to be a trifle annoying, however, since with every nail I hammered in, some jack-ass neighbor decided to pound back on the wall. Jerkface. It wasn't even 6:00pm yet, not remotely quiet time! I was definitely not going to stop until I had all of my pictures hung. The perplexing thing is that all of them were on an external wall, i.e., one that is not shared with anyone. How bizarre. I suppose it must have been the person downstairs banging back. Or I have ghosts. The latter seems unlikely, however, given the newness of my apartment.

Next I set out to tackle my postcard collection. Uf! This is always a daunting endeavor, but oh-so-fruitful in the end. I just love my postcard wall, and everyone who visits is dazzled by it as well. It almost has a "Where's Waldo?" quality, and can be quite entertaining to look at, never growing familiar or boring.

I plugged away at it for hours last night. Five hours, in fact, only taking a brief break to make Lemon Buttermilk Sherbet. It was so exhausting! All of me was sore by the time I called it a night. I resumed the task after ballet today and kept at it until I ran out of stickums. Here's how it looks right now:

Taking that picture was quite a challenge too. My camera's widest angle has exactly the ifov necessary to span the postcards when taking a picture pressed against the opposite wall. Which, of course, precluded my ability to frame the picture! After umpteen attempts that cropped one side of postcards only to include unwanted views of the window or the bookshelf, I finally managed to get one that was perfectly centered and managed to capture the entire spread. Phwew!

Then, since I can't get enough of counting things, I decided to quantify my collection. The picture helped immeasurably since I could mark off postcards that had already been counted. There are currently 221 postcards on my wall, and 86 waiting for stickums, yielding a grand total of 307!! Hopefully I'll get the remaining 86 up soon, but I think first I'll have to wait for Office Max to restock their stickums...

Anyway, you all should really come visit and bask in the glory of my postcard wall; pick out the ones that you've sent, and admire all the others!
