Atrocities

That's right. There are war crimes and human rights violations going on right here. Ok, fine, chalk that up to my love of hyperbole. But really, it's been a crappy week!

The number 1 human rights violation is that my roommate canceled our DSL. Did she have my approval? Did she discuss it with me? Did she even have the decency to let me know? What do you think? No! No! and No! Grrrrr. I learned about this atrocity when our internet stopped working on Monday. Naturally, I assumed it was going through a flakey phase. Since it never came back, even after resetting the modem and the router, I asked her if she was having troubles. And the bomb dropped. She told me that she'd arranged to cancel it, starting June 20th, since "that's close to when [I'm] moving out". (Close, my ass. That's a full week and a half before I need to be out by.) They turned it off on the 12th. Serves her right, but what about me? If she'd asked me, I would have told her under no circumstances could it be canceled on the 20th. That I would definitely need it through the 24th, at least. And not for frivolous things like IMing, playing sudoku, and searching the web. We have fieldwork June 20th-23rd, which I am in charge of. I need to be in contact so that I can stay abreast of and correct any problems that might arise, and that requires that I have email access in the evenings from home.

So I'm moving out. I hadn't really set a firm moving date yet; this has prompted me to do so (and to choose one that's still earlier than I'd anticipated). I'm fed up. Since I'd be moving out in a matter of weeks anyway, I'm no longer invested in diplomatic relations. I'd rather not look for a silver lining and gloss over the fact that she cut off our internet without the courtesy of notifying me. My summer sublease is available already and it has fast internet. I'm moving to Davis! This weekend the cats and I and any other essentials (but probably no furniture, that can wait until after fieldwork) are out of here. I'm really looking forward to living somewhere new.

The other major atrocity of this week is that someone stole Steggie's ice cream cone antenna topper. This is getting to be too much! It was a graduation present and had festooned Steggie's antenna, bobbling above us, for nearly 4 years. It was the perfect accessory to the perfect car. And now it's gone. Who would be so cruel? Who would even want something that had weathered 4 years of Central Valley heat and rain? Jenny thinks that this is a great opportunity for moving on, redefining our image, and all that. And she's right. It will be exciting to have a shiny new antenna topper, but right now the wound is too fresh, the cut too deep.

I hope my week gets better.
