Sizing down
I just altered my tutu. It was just a little too roomy; some of the hooks needed to be moved over, especially the bottom few on the bodice. I'm still wearing it, actually. I love tutus! Tutus make everything better! The correct procedure for blogging in a tutu is to sit on the floor (in swastika position, I think it's called) and place the computer on the seat of the chair. Hooray for laptops!
This tutu is actually shaped very strangely. It's big on the bottom around the hips and waist, but small up top. What, am I supposed to be a pear-shaped ballerina? Weird! Actually, it could probably stand to be taken in in the bust too. I like my tutus to be tight! This one isn't really baggy in the bust (and not in the hips anymore either, since I took in a few inches), but I'm able to hook it up myself. Now, tutus shouldn't be so tight that you have to hold on to the bed post to be hooked into them, or anything, but since the hooks are in the back, being able to hook one up yourself means there's definitely some extra room to play with.
This brings me to size charts in general. Seriously, what's up with them? I know that everyone is built differently, and there's really no standard figure, but when I compare my measurements to theirs, I really wonder what they've been smoking. My measurements are all over the leotard size chart. My hips are either small or medium. My bust is small (go figure). And my waist is large... You can stop rubbing your eyes in disbelief. That's typed correctly: large. Of course, it's because I don't actually have a waist.... Straight up and down, that's me. (Although, lately I've been very excited to notice that I'm developing a waist! It's very high though: noticeably above my belly button, which is where they say your natural waist should be... Or maybe my belly button is just low?) Usually I just average out my sizes and get medium leotards. They generally seem to fit pretty well.
But now, back to the tutu. I'm kind of bouncing around in this post. Blame the iced vanilla soy latte... It's bigger now than it was when I got it a few months ago (needed someone else to hook it back then). Everyone else thinks that's great, but they have a hard time understanding that I don't want to lose weight. This is the 2nd time Cara's ballet classes have made me skinnier. (As I'm sure you'll all agree, I don't really need to be skinnier.) I first noticed this troubling trend a year and a half ago. I was trying on old dresses to decide what to wear to Juliet's wedding, and discovered that one of my old prom dresses was back to fitting the way it did in high school. Like most people, I had gained a few pounds my freshman year of college, but I guess I lost them again in grad school. (The funny thing is how much better everyone seemed to think I looked with those 10 pounds.)
So urrr, getting skinnier. (I don't have a scale, so I can't really quantify it.) Most people hate me when I complain about losing weight. I'm clearly dancing too much! I'm actually dancing more now than I did even in highschool. And I think it shows (and not just because of the weight loss). I definitely think I'm dancing better now than I ever have before. I won't be able to dance as much in the summer, though, so hopefully I'll plump up a little. And hopefully my blisters will be able to heal. One of them is turning black! Poor toesies.
And on that note, you should all try to make it to Davis next weekend for my ballet recital! ;)
