The Power of Procrastination

Jorge Cham, the author of the comic strip Piled Higher & Deeper (PhD), spoke on campus today. I blew off lab meeting to go. My advisor gave me a guilt trip for that, but there was NO WAY I was skipping Jorge Cham! First of all, we have lab meeting with the same old people every week while this talk was a one-time-only kind of appearance. Additionally, I've been excited about the talk for MONTHS.

PhD is the best comic strip from the Stanford Daily, and, even better, it's about grad students! It's such a great strip that it's been syndicated in other student newspapers across the country, and the website receives millions of hits from visitors around the world. It's just a great, great comic! So great that it qualifies as one of the 4 that I read every day, even though he doesn't update it daily!

His talk, The Power of Procrastination, did not disappoint. It was so funny! Go to the site, check his tour schedule to see if he's coming to a campus near you. If he is, GO! To those of you in Athens, he's speaking at UGA on March 25. GO! And especially if you're a grad student, GO!

After the talk he signed books. Thanks to Brian, my grad school "mentor", I have a book! It was a graduation gift. And it totally impressed him that my copy was old-school, from the original printing. Everybody else's was shiny... I gushed that I'd been reading his strip since I was a froshie at Stanford, and yet I still chose the path of the grad student. So he dedicated my book with "didn't you learn!?" Yay. =)

The funny part is that right before it was my turn to get his autograph I got really jittery. There I was, about to meet someone who is practically a celebrity! Whee. It's just too much excitement =D.

And don't forget, GO!
