Know your audience

I never read the Stanford Alumni Magazine. It's a matter of principle. Any magazine that advertises Maserati convertibles on the back cover is not even trying to address itself to me (except for in the postal sense =P). The latest issue has an even wider gap between the back cover advertisement and myself. Can you guess what it is?

Private jets.

Um, yeah... Can I please request the starving grad student edition?

But seriously, how many Stanford alumni even are in the market for a private jet? Maybe it's all a show? Maybe they deliberately misadvertise on the back cover to make us feel like we're big, important people, and more importantly, to show the world what big, important people all Stanford alumni are.

A Tom Fazio designed golf course. A sports club. World-class hospitality. Estate home sites from 3 to 86 acres-a very few remain available from $1,000,000."

  • Oh, I love the Class Notes! They're so much fun, if you vaguely remember the person, but would have never thought of them otherwise...

But the rest of it, yeah, it cracks me up, trips to the Caribbean for $10,000, with the company of Stanford students... Uh, thanks, I'll find my own company of Stanford students and we'll go for $300. :P

  • What, you mean your RAship doesn't cover a private jet?

  • You know, it might if I didn't squander it (foolishly, I know) on things like rent and groceries.
