Quercus
Oaks are among my favorite trees. I love them for their sprawling, gnarledness. And the most sprawling, most gnarled, and my most favorite trees are the live oaks along the coast in the Southeast. How I would love to go to Cumberland Island right now to revel in these trees, not to mention hang out on the beach and sift through the road looking for shark teeth.
I bring this up because the latest issue of the Sierra Club's magazine features tree photography by James Balog. I usually don't even glance at the Sierra Club magazine, but I'm a big fan of trees, so the pictures of trees on the cover at least tempted me to flip through this article. And it was well worth it! Scroll to the bottom of it, and you'll see a picture of an amazing live oak.
(Incidentally, I've always thought that the scientific name for oaks, Quercus, sounds like it should be chanted by monks =D.)

Sentiam nella foresta
il cuculo cantar
ai piedi d'una quercia
lo stiamo ad ascoltar.
Cucù, cucù, cucù, cucù, cucù, cucù, cucù.

I love oaks too! I can't remember when I first saw them, or when I realized they were oaks, or even when I realized I really, really liked oaks, but... I can so relate :) (except for the shark teeth part, seeing animal remains usually make me want to throw up :)
