The world is collapsing around our ears

The new Sheryl Crow song was played on the radio while I drove to campus today. Some of the lyrics really made me wonder... The chorus sings (something like):

And every time you hear the rolling thunder
You turn around before the lightning strikes

Huh. Does the object (the "you") of these lines have a time machine or something? Do they live in some sort of perpendicular universe where sound travels faster than light? Does Sheryl Crow lack such a basic understanding of weather and physics? Or is she just crossing her fingers and hoping that her general audience is too dumb to object? Or is it that Lance Armstrong is just that good?
