I don't know why i-tunes uses the space bar as the keyboard shutcut to pause the music. The space bar is the largest, most conspicuous key on the keyboard. Any enterprising cat with a penchant for walking/sitting on the keyboard is guaranteed to hit it quite frequently. I'm so tired of Mitzi turning off my music! Though I guess it isn't as bad as her latest trend of turning off the computer...
