Experimental fruit
Some of the best things about UC Davis are the departments of Pomology, Viticulture, and Enology. I’d never heard about any of these sciences before coming here. Davis is such a large school that it has whole departments for mystery sciences! It’s also an Ag school, which is how we manage to have those departments in the first place. Pomology is the science of fruit-bearing trees, and Viticulture and Enology both have to do with wine. And while I’m sure that these are great departments for their own scholarly and vocational merits, I don’t really care about their renown. I think they’re great because of the experimental fruit. There are frequently boxes full of experimental fruit free for the taking! (In season, of course.) I just finished eating an amazing experimental peach. I’m not sure what exactly is being done to this fruit, but I assume that it’s nothing too terrifying or objectionable if they’re giving it away to unsuspecting students and faculty. Unless of course we’re also part of the experiment. Hmmm….
Wickson Hall is the bastion of all of these succulent sciences. I used to walk through Wickson several times every day. Not because I needed to, but because it was on the way from where I park Steggie to my lab, and it’s much better to cut through buildings than to walk around them. Especially when there might be treasures of experimental fruit inside! But my lab moved, so for the past 14 months, I’ve not been able to cruise through looking for produce very frequently. Bummer! (Although that's one of the very few disadvantages of our move. Our new location is soooo much better! We have windows!) I think I have to go to Wickson on Wednesday though. I hope there’s a box of experimental fruit!!
The only downside of experimental fruit is that they don’t get stickers. =) Imagine how cool a great big "EXPERIMENTAL" sticker would be!

Isn't experimental fruit reason enough to *go* to Wickson?? :)

It's really far away now!

That's what Steggie's for... ;) And also to grab a couple of extra crates and mail 'em out to Pennsylvania, which has a sad, sad lack of experimental fruit :P

That wouldn't work either! You know how college campuses are: mostly closed to vehicle traffic. It'd take at least as long to drive Steggie as to walk, and once I got over to that side of campus, I still wouldn't be parked very close...
And I think shipping experimental fruit would be a bad idea... The peaches Dave brought over from the research farm yesterday are already leaky and stinky. Sorry.

Whoa. The experimental nectarine I had with breakfast today was weird! When I cut it in half, I effortlessly sliced through the pit too. And inside the pit was another pit that looked like an almond.

that's not a new thing...it happens...you probably hit the seam or whatever it is on the pit...Duh.
