Little Meg goes to the frozen northland

Gwar. I just typed up this entry, but it was lost by a server error. =P Alas. But since the georegistration I'm running (which I started before writing the first entry) is only 9% complete, I think I'll have plenty of time to attempt a recreation =D. And this time I'll save a copy in WordPad for just-in-case...

Powerlessness

Our electricity has been extremely flakey lately. Last night we lost power for the 2nd time in as many weeks. The first time was on election night. We had no electricity from 10:30pm till 7 the next morning. I wondered if this signified that Bush had won the election and that terrorists had immediately bombed our power plant in response. Naturally, I was too lazy to determine if this was true, since without electricity I couldn't turn to the tv or the internet. And while I do have a battery powered radio, I'd have to dig it out of the closet, hope that it's batteries were good, and also hope for reception... But as it turned out, the results of the election were not official until after our power actually returned, so I'm glad I didn't expend any effort. I didn't really feel like going to sleep yet at 10:30 that night, and fortunately, I was battery-powered enough not to have to. I really wanted to finish the book I was reading (The Nonexistent Knight & The Cloven Viscount by Italo Calvino. Very good!), so I did so by the light of a headlamp. Then I took a candlelit shower, and only then did I retire. But first I scrounged through my desk drawers and actually succeeded in finding a functional watch, with indiglo no less!, to keep by my bedside. I had a whole plan figured out for the possibility that we would not have power back in the morning. I was going to sleep in (of course!). Upon waking, I would retrieve my cell phone from the car to call lab to ascertain how widespread the power failure was. If campus was powerless as well (fingers crossed), I would hunker down for a relaxing day at home. I was kind of disappointed not to have to carry out this plan.

Fortunately, the power plant was not bombed. And really, who would target Woodland? Unfortunately, I was not able to sleep in. Even though power was back before it was time to wake up, there would have been enough of an excuse to sleep in, what with alarms resetting themselves and all. But, as is so often the case when I want to sleep in, I woke up early on my own. Grrr. In this instance, I blame the recent reversion to Standard Time and the jetlag associated therewith. And finally, unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately, depending on if you were affected or not) the outage seems to have been very localized. My friends who live only a mile away suffered not even a flicker.

I do not know what time the power went out last night. I was awakened by it's return, however. Dratted beeps and whirs of electronic gizmos powering back up... I figured that this would be another great chance to sleep in and possibly "miss" class. Today even has perfect sleeping in weather. Here it is, 12:45, and the fog hasn't even begun to think about burning off. (I can't sleep in on sunny days since my windows face east.) Yet of course, I woke up at the usual time (7:40) on my own. And since I was reasonably suspicious about the time, I got up to turn on my computer and see what time it was. Unfortunately, this only confirmed my suspicions, forcing me to get up for real since it would not be conscionable for me to go back to sleep now that I knew it was time to get up... The whole boon of power outages is ignorance of the time... Major bummer. Oh well. Maybe I'll plan to sleep in tomorrow. I don't even have a morning class to worry about "missing".

Sock of the day!! Leopard print polarfleece!

Sock of yesterday!! Sky blue with Cookie Monster on the ankles and toes! (With ballet tights/legwarmers later on, of course.)

(Georegistration has now made it to 17%. Yargh. This is going to take forever! (of course, I sometimes consider that a good thing =D.))
