Motivation
It's interesting to think of what motivates us to have weblogs. Like Calvin, we all believe that we have something to offer. Maybe we aren't so arrogant to assume our own genius, propagating our ideas for the betterment and enlightenment of mankind, but we do have some reason, some goal. Maybe we feel we're propagating entertainment, amusement? Or maybe we're more reconciled with our dullness =). I boldly provide this weblog as a cure for insomnia! (yeah, I know, you've all heard that before.) Maybe we just feel it's a way for our friends that we've woefully slipped out of touch with to keep tabs on us. (But who am I kidding? None of you read this! =D)
All of these reasons involve an external world for which we write. Maybe that isn't the case. Perhaps weblogs are our way of documenting our lives for our older selves? Of course, this assumes that they survive the ages. (could be a big assumption?) Like a not-so-secret diary. It's not so incredible. Personally, I've always kind of wanted to keep a journal of sorts, but have never felt able to. My problem is that the concept of a secret diary implies a depth and personal nature to the contents. Not so with me. The one time I attempted a diary (in 6th grade), I melodramatized my life, just to justify the secrecy. It lasted for 2 days =D.
Perhaps we feel that we write well? Or we enjoy writing? Enjoy reading what we write? Why not? We wouldn't put something out here if we felt it made us look like uneducated shits, would we? So yeah. I like writing, I like reading over my writings (except for those old humanities papers. shudder!). I know mine isn't the most literary of writing styles, but that's ok. I think it's important to recognize what your style is, because that's your voice. So often, I find that when people try to abandon their style for something loftier, I find things generally come out feeling touchy-feely and trite. I've been told before that my emails sound just like me, that people can really hear me saying them aloud, that I capture my style of speaking in written expression. You may disagree, but I took this as a compliment. I only hope that the same applies to this weblog, though I suspect that I put on conceited airs for it =).
So yeah. I'm writing for you guys (if you're even there). But I'm also writing for me, which makes it less depressing if you aren't there =). Hopefully this wasn't too trite, touchy-feely, or melodramatic =).
And yeah. That Calvin and Hobbes was today's inspiration.
