It's that time again...
Yeah, that's right. I've been getting down to the funky socks, the little kid undies. It's laundry time!!!
Laundry is always an adventure for me. And this time didn't disappoint. It's been cooling down here lately. Temperatures are only in the 70s or 80s, not the triple digits (thank god!). But unfortunately, this means that clothes can no longer dry outside in a single day. Like any student, I do laundry when I need clean clothes. So I can't really afford to lose a whole day between starting laundry and finishing it. Also, who knows what kind of critters and aromas might be out there just waiting to lodge themselves in my clothing. Being out there for parts of 2 days and overnight is just not a risk I want to deal with. So today I checked out the laundromat scene here in Woodland.
That's where the adventure comes in. It took me 20 minutes to find a laundromat! And that's after I located several on yahoo. The first one was not where Yahoo said it was. Apparently it had decided to move to a slightly less ghetto shopping center, and had not yet reopened. I found this out because I drove past it's new location in my quest for the 2nd choice laundromat. This one I had a hard time finding as well. It was where it said it was (in Purity Plaza), I just was slightly confused by the map scale and thought I must've gone the wrong direction since I hadn't found it yet, when I was only about 2 blocks from it. So I decided to turn around and try the other way. Early on in that direction I realized that in terms of cardinal directions my first route had been correct, but I continued on in the wrong direction, just in case Woodland Streets do not abide by cardinal directions or in case I'd find another laundromat at the other end of town. No such luck. But then I knew how to get there, and that I'd been really close before. So I returned. I found Purity Plaza, and there I purified my clothes!
The laundering itself was pretty uneventful. Just one detail to note. The first dryer I put my clothes in smelled like that gas that bunsen burners use in chem lab. (To redeem myself from hopeless geekiness, it took me a little while to place the smell.) While exploding in a fireball probably would dry my clothes, I decided to opt for a slightly slower and less destructive method and switched dryers.
Having freshly laundered clothes is great! And since they weren't line dried, it's even better! They're soft! They don't have funky creases! There aren't any clothes pin indentations! Fantastic! And having to venture around Woodland was good too. I really don't know my town well at all. I pretty much do all of my errands in Davis on my way to or from campus. But now I know where some important things are here. I found some drug stores, some nicer super-markets (there are only ghetto ones on my side of town), and the Blockbuster! Yeah! Now if only I had a vcr... Or a satisfyingly functional dvd player.... ho-hum.
