...if it ain't got that swing
My Schnookums (Jenny) came to visit me! So this morning I took her to Davis to show her around my stomping grounds. First we found the house where we lived when we were 4, and the park that was around the block from it. We played at the park for a little while. It has swings, and really cool slides, as well as some mystery things that we think must be fun if you're a kid... We swung and slid. It was swell. Unfortunately schnookums' shoulder hurts, so we weren't able to play too hard. We'll have to go back some time when she's recovered and swing and slide with more gusto.
Then we went to campus. I showed her my folder. It's pretty much the only indication of my presence on campus. I may not have an office or a desk, but I've got a folder. And I'm damn proud of it! It's my mail folder. So far it's just been a folder though, with no mail. That's ok. It's a good folder, and it's trying real hard to do it's job well, just can't wait to hold mail... (It's always important to reassure folders. Sometimes they start to take their job too personally, and feel it's their fault that you don't get any mail. Never forget to tell a folder you care.)
One of my classes is in a building that I have a key for, so I was able to get us into the building to show her a classroom. Oh, the thrills. In the building were lots of flyers for the Davis Social Dance Club! Oooh, I'm so joining! Their first meeting is on Wednesday. There's going to be Lindy Hopping and free pizza! What more could you ask for?!!? =) I personally find the flyer a little offensive though. "Want to learn to swing dance? Want to learn to dance like this?" it asks you. ("this" is a picture of a couple lindy hopping.) Oh, that's all fine and good. But under the picture, it adds "Not a chance...". What's that about?! Oh well. Even though it may be run by social deviants, I'll still go to the first meeting. Gotta get my swing and pizza fix in! All I have to say is that I will not get involved in the administration of a student group. I've been there. It's no fun. Blech.
After showing Jenny my main haunts on campus we proceeded to downtown Davis. There we checked out a used cd store. They were having a sale on their bargain cds! I got 3 cds for $8 total! They're pretty random, though I guess that's a necessary criterion for bargain cds. Here's what they are, in no particular order:
1. Greatest hits of the Bangles. It was only $1.50. How could I not get it?! And the cd seems to be in fine condition. No skips or scratches. It just didn't have the liner notes... That's alright!
2. A random foreign cd. I started getting into foreign music this summer when I visited Prague. A friend and I decided we really wanted to get some Czech pop music. So we did. It's great. So I was kind of excited when I saw the foreign cds in the bargain bin. They were all either Asian or Russian. So I picked out one with a pretty picture on the cover. It seems Russian. At least, it's dominated by the Cyrillic alphabet. But it also has some chinese characters on it. For that reason, I'm going to dub it Siberian. I think it might also be communist (based on the picture on the back).
It's ... well ... It's interesting. The songs are all right. Pretty catchy, and all, but between each track things get kind of crazy. Kind of reminiscent of Revolution #9, or electronic feedback, or nails scratching a blackboard... Not pleasant sounds. It's very weird. I can't wait to go back and get another random foreign cd!!
3. The last cd I got is called "In the Mood with Glenn Miller". Aw yeah! It's great. It reminds me of the big band radio station back in the Bay Area. I miss that station! And sadly I never got around to taping any of it. Then I could always have it, even in the most desolate reaches of the Central Valley. Though of course, it would be permanently playing the same program... But alas. It was not to be.
